Full Scholarship PS Writing Guide: 5-Paragraph Framework to Impress Admissions Officers

Core Focus: Personal Statement (PS) ≠ Resume (CV), and the PS is NOT a repetition of your CV! The PS is your opportunity to showcase your motivation for applying and your career goals. Admissions Officers (AOs) look for answers to three main questions when reading your PS:

  1. Is your motivation strong enough?
  2. How well do you fit with our program?
  3. Do you have sufficient potential?

Here is the writing a PS for a full scholarship application, broken down into a 5-paragraph framework to help you clearly express your motivations and goals.

Paragraph 1: Hook + Motivation (Why This?)

Start with the most eye-catching experience and clearly state your motivation for applying.

Formula: A (Standout experience or background) + B (How this background shaped your career goals) → C (Why this program is the key to achieving these goals)

Paragraphs 2-3: Perfect Match (Why You?)

Analyze the program’s courses and identify the points that match your background and career goals, proving you are an ideal fit.

Formula: Your skill gaps + Specific courses or resources in the program = Perfect solution

Paragraph 4: Additional Motivation + Deep Understanding (Additional Motivation & Understanding)

Introduce a secondary motivation to further demonstrate your desire for the program, while also showcasing a deeper understanding of the school and program.

Formula: Your “personal growth goals” (non-core skills) + School’s “unique environment/resources” = Demonstrating your deeper understanding of the school and program

Closing Paragraph: Closing the Loop + Future Outlook (Closing & Future Goals)

Elevate your motivation by linking your personal goals with the school’s values, and express gratitude to the committee.

Formula: Short-term goal (post-graduation plan) + Long-term goal (career aspirations) + Re-emphasize that “this program is the only stepping stone to achieving your goals” + Thank the committee for their consideration.⸻

PS Writing Tips

  1. Start planning and revising 3 months in advance: Great PS comes from continuous revisions, so give yourself plenty of time to polish your statement.
  2. Research the program thoroughly: Before writing, make sure you fully understand the program’s curriculum and resources.
  3. Show, don’t just tell: Use specific examples to “show” your motivation and abilities, rather than just making vague statements.
  4. Eliminate grammar errors: Always have someone proofread your PS to catch any mistakes.
  5. Ensure consistency between PS, CV, and Recommendation Letters: Make sure your personal narrative is consistent across all your application materials.

With this framework, you can ensure that your PS clearly and powerfully showcases your motivation and alignment with the program, capturing the attention of the admissions officers.
